How Does a Tarot Reading Actually Work? (From a Professional Reader)

If you’ve never had a tarot reading before, you might wonder how a professional tarot reading actually works. You might imagine something mysterious, dramatic, or even a little intimidating.
People often picture dim lights, a crystal ball, and someone predicting the exact moment their future will unfold.
But the truth is, a tarot reading is usually far simpler and far more powerful than that.
After years of reading tarot professionally, I’ve found that what people are really seeking isn’t fortune-telling. They’re looking for clarity. They want reassurance, direction, or simply someone who can help them see their situation from a different perspective.
Tarot is one of the tools I use to help people do exactly that.
What Tarot Cards Actually Are
A tarot deck is a set of symbolic cards that represent different experiences we all go through in life.
There are cards about:
new beginnings
relationships
challenges
transformation
confidence
endings and fresh starts
When the cards are laid out during a reading, they often reflect what someone is currently moving through emotionally, spiritually, or practically.
People are often surprised at just how relevant the messages feel.
That’s because tarot tends to highlight patterns, feelings, and possibilities that may already be quietly unfolding beneath the surface.
What Happens During a Tarot Reading
Every reader has their own way of working, but most readings follow a similar flow.
Before you arrive, I take a moment to set the intention for the reading. I call in clarity, protection and guidance so that everything that comes through is for your highest good and in your best interest. I make sure the energy feels clear, grounded and supportive before we begin.
Usually a client will arrive with a question or an area of life they’d like guidance on. It might be about relationships, career, family, or a decision they’re trying to make. I am able to cover all areas if you wish.
Once we begin, we shuffle the cards and lay them out in a spread.
From there, the reading becomes a conversation.
The tarot cards highlight the energy around a situation. They often reveal patterns, emotions, or influences that may already be unfolding beneath the surface of someone’s life.
This is usually the point where my psychic abilities begin to step forward more strongly.
Tarot for me personally has awaits been a powerful bridge to my intuition.
As the cards reveal the themes of a situation, my clairvoyance (clear seeing) and claircognisance (clear knowing) often come in to do what I sometimes describe as the “heavier lifting” in a reading.
The tarot opens the door, but the intuitive information that follows can bring deeper clarity, guidance, and understanding.
Clients are often surprised by how specific this part of a reading can become. It’s not uncommon for details, insights, or validations to emerge that go beyond the symbolism of the cards themselves.
That’s why many people say a reading feels less like fortune-telling and more like a meaningful conversation where things suddenly begin to make sense.
Is Tarot Predicting the Future?
This is probably the biggest misconception about tarot.
While tarot can sometimes highlight likely outcomes, it isn’t about locking someone into a fixed future.
Life is always moving and evolving.
What tarot really does is illuminate the energy of the present moment and the direction things may move toward if you stay on the current path.
But we always have choices.
That’s why many people find tarot empowering rather than limiting. It gives insight that can help someone make decisions with greater awareness.
Why People Seek Tarot Readings
Over the years I’ve noticed that most people come to tarot for similar reasons.
They might be:
standing at a crossroads in life
navigating a relationship
processing grief or change
feeling stuck and needing perspective
searching for reassurance that they’re on the right path
Sometimes people simply want confirmation of what their intuition is already telling them.
Tarot can act as a mirror for those inner thoughts and feelings.
My Personal Approach to Tarot
I first started learning tarot when I was sixteen years old. Yep, many moons ago, without the help of Google.
I practised day and night. Whenever I could.
At the time, I had no idea it would eventually become such an important part of my life and work.
Over the years, tarot became less about memorising card meanings (although, that part is very important) and more about learning to listen to intuition, to energy, and to the person sitting in front of me.
For me, tarot readings are never about telling someone what they must do.
They’re about creating a space where insight, reflection, and understanding can emerge.
Sometimes the most powerful moment in a reading is simply when someone realises they already knew the answer within themselves.
Thinking About Having a Tarot Reading?
If you’re curious about tarot, the best way to understand it is to experience it for yourself.
Every reading is unique because every person brings their own story, questions, and energy to the cards.
So if you’re hoping for me to spy on an ex, I won’t be the reader for you.
I can however help you find alignment and connect to your own intuition.
